The collection was begun in 1930 by Frank Flemington, Managing Editor of Ryerson Press. It was donated to the University of New Brunswick by the Flemington family in 1986.

This collection draws together published editions of the journals, poems, essays, and correspondence of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The collection also includes pamphlets, tear-sheets, and biographies which show Emerson's influence on western intellectual thought in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
