Malcolm Lowry Collection
University of British Columbia, Special Collections and University Archives Division

Lowry, Malcolm; English literature

The collection was established in 1960. Shortly after Malcolm Lowry's death in 1957, the manuscripts and books from his home in North Vancouver were acquired by the university. The library has since developed the collection.

The collection includes works by Malcolm Lowry in various editions; all first editions are present. Also included are critical and biographical works; theses written at other universities; and anthologies and critical works with some Lowry content. Books from Lowry's own library form part of the collection. The chronological emphasis is from the 1930s to the present. This collection is an adjunct to the library's extensive Lowry literary manuscript collection which includes drafts of Under the Volcano and other novels as well as correspondence with prominent writers sus as Conrad Aitken and Earl Birney. Present acquisition policies are to acquire all current relevant publications, theses, literary manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, sound recordings, films and videotapes pertaining to the study of Malcolm Lowry and his writings.

English predominates although all languages are sought.

ca 375 monographs; 8.8 metres of textual records; ca 750 photographs; 9 phonograph records; 15 sound recordings; 10 microforms; 6 films; 1 serial currently received.
