History
The collection was established in the early 1970s. The principal donors were Mr. William Watson and Sir John Galvin. The collection has been developed as part of the private press collections and is supported largely by the Hague and Gill Press, and St. Dominic's Press collections. The collection is now made up of books, periodicals, engravings, ephemera, and manuscript material. Some materials are from Gill's library.
Description
The collection is noted for its comprehensive holdings of works by and about Eric Gill. Gill was a printer, type and letter designer, sculptor, engraver, stone cutter, and writer. His writings covered a wide range of topics, including religion, sociology, art, and engraving. The collection contains works illustrated or designed by Gill, and works by and about his pupils and contemporaries. Some unique items are: two holograph manuscripts; variant editions; and ephemeral items printed by Gill, such as wedding invitations and Christmas cards. Printed and ephemeral materials, engravings, and other items of realia make this a comprehensive collection. The collection offers scope for bibliographical and textual analysis due to the large number of variant editions available. Present acquisition plans are to acquire all material by or about Gill which is lacking from the collection. Excluded from collection development plans are engravings and manuscripts (except those which come as part of a large collection).
Language
English, French, and selected foreign language material.
