History
The collection was established in 1966. Three of the first five books donated to Queen's University in 1840 were bibles. Over the years, many bibles were added to the collection, by purchase and by gift. A notable gift was received in 1938 from Elizabeth Snodgrass (daughter of Queen's Principal Rev. William Snodgrass). The collection is developed largely by gift.
Description
The collection contains bibles in more than seventy five languages and most versions of the Bible printed from the fifteenth century to the present. The oldest bible in the collection is a 1491 Latin Vulgate Bible published by Froben. Some unique items include several early editions of the Geneva Bible; the Bishop's Bible (1568); the Douai Bible, the first edition of the King James Authorized Version of 1611; and the Doves Press Bible printed in 1903 by Cobden Sanderson. Significant new editions are added to the collection as they appear.
