Newman, John Henry; Theology
Rev. Cyril W. Sullivan donated his private collection on J. H. Newman to the University of St. Michael's College in 1973. Further donations have been received from Rev. Peter Sheehan, Msgr. Richard O'Brien, and Rev. James C. Carberry. A grant has also helped strengthen the collection.
The collection includes all works by J. H. Newman, works by his contemporaries, critical works, and some translations. There is also a rare collection of international theses. The geographic and chronological emphasis is on nineteenth century England. At present, English materials are collected.
750 monographs; 10 serials; 3 serials currently received; 450 microforms.
The collection is catalogued. LC subject headings are used. A local classification system, based on LC, is used. A pamphlet by Sister Mary Esther Hanley (see below) details works by Newman in the collection. The holdings are recorded in the University of Toronto Union Catalogue, the National Library Union Catalogue, and UTLAS.
