The collection was established in 1968. It arrived at Mills Memorial Library in 1978. It was purchased as part of the first Archives of Bertrand Russell.
Material from Russell's library is worldwide in coverage. The collection includes the books that Bertrand Russell acquired and kept, or was sent. Many unique pamphlets, annotated books, and private press items are included. The chronological emphasis is from the seventeenth century to 1967. Items acquired by Russell after 1967, when he became 95, are not included. Books acquired by Russell after May 1967, were sold to the European University Institute. Volumes that were separated from Russell's library are purchased as they become available.
English and other selected language material. Multilingual works are acquired at present.
3,075 monographs; 12 serials.
The collection is catalogued and accessible from a circulation database printout. LC subject headings and classification are used. The holdings are recorded in UTLAS. A checklist is for sale.
