The library was established in 1968 to support documents in the Russell Archives.

Description
Books relating to the study of Bertrand Russell include those he reviewed or otherwise cited, and those with chapters on, or with significant references to him. Relevant reference works for scholars conducting research are included. The chronological and geographic emphasis is on twentieth century Britain and America. There is also a significant amount of nineteenth century material as well as material on countries which Russell visited. Some unique items, not in the National Library Union Catalogue, are included. Books with minor references to Russell are excluded. At present, both U.K. and U.S. editions with contributions by Russell are purchased. The library does not purchase translations of commentaries unless the commentaries were originally published in a foreign language.

An in-house summary of the collection has been written. It is, however, outdated.
