Library of George Santayana
University of Waterloo, Library

Santayana, George; Philosophy, Spanish

The collection was established in the early 1960s. It was purchased from Basil Blackwell Ltd. in Oxford, England, and is a portion of Santayana's personal library. Some books remain in Spain with Santayana's family while others are in the Georgetown University Library.

The collection is a major portion of Santayana's personal collection. Material on philosophy, literature, history, religion, and psychology is present. Most volumes have been annotated extensively by Santayana. Included are his own copies of many of his works, presentation copies, etc. The library currently acquires copies of Santayana's works not already in the collection and any reference works relating to him. The library hopes to acquire that portion of Santayana's library which still resides with his family in Spain.

English and French language material predominates. There are also works in Spanish, Italian, and German.

350 monographs: 1 serial: 2 manuscripts.
