The collection was established in 1975. Dr. Henry H. Crapo, a former University of Waterloo faculty member, donated 150 items and continues to support the collection. In 1982, the three hundred volume Chaffee/Butsova Collection was purchased. Grants have helped build the collection.

The collection covers the history of dance and ballet from the sixteenth century to the present and includes landmark treatises of Noverre, Feuillet, and Beaumont. Some rare items include Basses danses (Lyon, 1535) and volume IV of Le répertoire des bals (1763). Also found are unique copies of Journal des spectacles (Paris, 1764-1772).
