Layton, Irving, 1912- ; Canadian poetry--20th century; Poets, Canadian (English)--20th century

Manuscripts and letters were first acquired in 1969, and in 1973 it was decided to collect as much as possible written by and about Layton, within practical budget limits.

The collection contains all of Layton's published works, including his publication in periodicals, as well as critical material and clippings about the man and his work from a variety of sources. There are also manuscripts of individual poems and his collected works as well as notebooks, personal and professional correspondence, audio and video tapes of the poet's broadcasts and readings, photographs, scrapbooks, and memorabilia.

English predominates, but there are translations and criticisms of Layton in French, Italian, Polish, German, Hebrew, Korean, Greek, and Spanish.

165 monographs; 220 serials; 500 manuscripts; 8 000 letters; 70 audio cassettes; 6 video cassettes; 1 film; 90 sets of photographs.

Bibliographic Access
Monographs are catalogued online and are available via the online catalogue "CLUES". Card catalogues exist for most other material and a finding aid is in preparation to allow improved access.

Physical Access
As part of Special Collections, the stacks are closed. Access is by permission of the Special Collections Librarian. Permission is required to view correspondence and some is completely restricted.For further information visit:
