Kenneth Webster Collection of Castles Dalhousie University, Killam Memorial Library Subjects Castles; Architecture, Medieval; Middles Ages; Romances; Military art and science History Dr. Kenneth G.T. Webster (1871-1942) collected material about castles and ruins as a natural extension of his research into the literary sources of medieval romances. He planned to publish an illustrated inventory of pre-1400 European castles. He bequeathed his personal research library to Dalhousie University. Backfiles of publications issued by twenty-one learned societies were included in his bequest and some of the subscriptions were continued by the Webster family until 1952. They also supplemented the original bequest with research notes and files. Description The collection consists primarily of books on castles including guidebooks, pamphlets, directories, handbooks, and society proceedings. As well as collecting material on specific castles, Dr. Webster collected related material on architecture, ancient monuments, archeology, military history, geography, topography, heraldry, battle accounts and city plans. Almost all the texts include finely engraved illustrations and maps or photographs. Language Primarily Latin, English, French and German. Holdings 614 published items, 5 large scrapbooks of castle illustrations, 10 volumes of research notes and 5 research files.
