The collection was purchased in 1973 from Mrs. Bertram R. Davis of Bristol, England, and consists of her husband's working library of material on Southey, Chatterton, Bristol, and the Romantic period. Additional materials have been acquired through regular purchases and donations.
Description
With Robert Southey as a focus, the collection covers precursors to the Romantic period, and Romantic literature (Coleridge, Wordsworth, Lamb, etc.). Also included is material on travel, Spain and Portugal, Napoleon and Russia, France and the revolution (all interests of Southey's). First and variant editions of most of the classics are present. Also present is a run of the Quarterly review which contains 116 contributions by Southey (according to Raimond). Twelve volumes from Southey's personal library, some with his bookplate and some in "Cottonian" bindings, are also present. The Thomas Chatterton and Bristol material forms a significant collection in itself. The collection also contains forty-four manuscript groups held in trust for an indefinite period, as well as Davis, extensive correspondence with twentieth century scholars and critics such as R. D. Havens, E. H. W. Meyerstein, M. H. Fitzgerald, and E. L. Griggs. Attempts are made to acquire all material by Southey and Chatterton in any edition. Related material is acquired on a selective basis.

Bibliographic Access
The collection is catalogued in the general library collection. Uncatalogued material is accessible by author / title in the library's automated acquisition system. LC and NLC subject headings are used. The material is arranged according to rare book shelf numbers. LC classification numbers are given as alternate numbers for somematerial. The holdings are recorded in the University of Waterloo Union Catalogue, the National Library Union Catalogue, and ESTC (where appropriate).
