The collection was established in 1965. Professors Ann Saddlemyer and Roger Bishop resolved a disagreement between the University of Texas and Sir Herbert Read (1893-1968). Consequently three trunks of Sir Herbert's papers were deposited with the University of Victoria Library.

The chronological and geographic emphasis is on twentieth century England. The collection does not include museum material such as artifacts, clothing, etc. Material in many languages is constantly being added to the collection.
English predominates. There is also material in Gemman, Hungarian, Italian, and Arabic.
