Description of Activity

Students will create a curling crossword using the "Curling Terms" below, and research their definitions.

Time

Two 40-minute lessons

Integration

This lesson can easily be integrated into a language unit that involves selecting materials from a variety of sources and using appropriate vocabulary.

Assessment

Ask students to exchange their crossword puzzles with partners and complete the puzzles. The accuracy of their definitions and their puzzle design will be apparent when the puzzles are completed.

Activity

  • Provide a sample crossword puzzle so that students can see the format. Explain how crossword puzzles are created using definitions of the terms and placing the words so that they share letters.
  • Give the students the list of curling terms. Have them go to the Canadian Curling Association website www.curling.ca/content/GoCurling/glossary.asp, and other sources, to find the meanings. Encourage them to add other, related words to their puzzles.
  • Ask students to create a curling crossword, with clues, for a partner to complete.
