This listing allows researchers to find the census districts and sub-districts under which the 1901 returns were enumerated. Knowledge of the district and sub-district is helpful for finding specific households within a community.
This listing also provides links to the electoral maps published by the federal government in 1895. Since the 1901 census districts and the 1895 electoral districts generally followed the same boundaries, the electoral maps provide researchers with a detailed description of the districts that were enumerated in 1901.
* The ARCHIVED - Electoral Atlas of the Dominion of Canada (published in 1895) did not include electoral maps of Yukon Territory or the North-West Territories (which comprised the Districts of Saskatchewan, Alberta, Assiniboia, Athabasca, Franklin, Keewatin, Mackenzie, and Ungava). Detailed electoral maps of Yukon Territory and the organized districts of the North-West Territories (i.e., the Districts of Athabasca, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Assiniboia) were, however, published in subsequent editions of the atlas, the first of which appeared in 1906.
* The Territories included Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories (which comprised the Districts of Saskatchewan, Alberta, Assiniboia, Athabasca, Franklin, Keewatin, Mackenzie and Ungava).
