Title:KALAMAZOO
Title year:1986
Original dialogue(s):French
Description:Félix Cotnoir, retired botanist, meets Pascal Globensky, a young immigrant who has not heard from his guardian, Helena Mentana, a middle-aged romance novelist hiding out in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to lick her wounds after the failure of her novel Kalamazoo. Cotnoir falls madly in love with this stranger, devours her novel, and memorizes the contents, dreaming of an amazing love affair. He whispers sweet nothings to a picture of the novelist dressed as a mermaid. Fate hears his pleas and sends him a mermaid who looks like Helena. He falls head over heels in love and finally experiences happiness. The mermaid, whose beauty had been ravaged by a lack of love, becomes young and beautiful once again. After a few nights of incredible passion, she is called back to the sea. Cotnoir then meets the real Helena and quickly comes to understand that this woman is not his Helena. He leaps into the sea in the hopes of finding his mermaid. A fishing boat picks up Cotnoir and his true love and brings them back to shore.
