Description:In November 1987, Vincent Van Gogh’s painting ‘‘Irises’’ was sold for 53.9 million dollars in a public auction by Sotheby’s in New York. The irony is that Van Gogh died in misery, practically unknown, without having sold a single painting while he was alive. This auction was the starting point for a sociological investigation into the art market, artists and their relationship with money. Through interviews with art collectors, sellers, gallery owners, museum directors, critics, art historians and Québec artists, we discover the ins and outs of the art world.
