| Description: | It is 1969. Jim and Mary Field and their three daughters, Norma, Sandy and Lou, form a dysfunctional suburban family. Jim, an alcoholic car salesman and petty tyrant, runs the household with military precision while Mary, a former dancer, lies impassively on the living room couch watching TV, debilitated by depression and alcohol. Domestic life is further undermined by a secret that the parents will not face: the suspicious death of their first-born son. Each daughter tries to escape the mess that is her home life in her own way. The rebellious Lou pursues a relationship with an American hippie, the attractive Sandy dreams of being a homemaker and mother but gets pregnant by an older married man, while the dutiful Norma obsesses about her dead brother. In their backyard is a fallout shelter, a relic of a not so distant past, and an illusory symbol of safety that witnesses some of the family’s most traumatic moments. As the arrival of 1970, is being celebrated Mary climbs onto the roof in a drunken haze and falls to her death. |
