The records in the Canadian Book Catalogues database have up to 20 fields. Select a field name for its description:
A unique number assigned to each record by the database management system to identify the record. A record can be found by searching for the Record ID using the Advanced Search. Enter the number into one of the text-entry boxes (e.g., 569) and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Record ID."
The person(s) responsible for the compilation of a catalogue. Search for compilers using the Basic Search by entering the name (e.g., Daley, John or Daley, J or Daley) into the text-entry box labelled "Compiler/Owner." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Compiler."
The owner of the material represented in a catalogue. Search for owners using the Basic Search by entering the name (e.g., Neilson, John or Neilson, J or Neilson) into the text-entry box labelled "Compiler/Owner." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Owner."
The primary title of a catalogue. Search for a title using the Basic Search by entering the title or part of the title (e.g., Catalogue of rare books) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the title or part of the title into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Title."
The name of the institution that caused a catalogue to be produced. Search for an institution using the Basic Search by entering the institution name (e.g., Williamson & Co) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Institution."
The name of the party responsible for printing a catalogue. Search for a printer using the Basic Search by entering the printer name (e.g., Nolan) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Printer."
The party (individual/firm) responsible for selling by auction the materials listed in a catalogue. Search for an auctioneer using the Basic Search by entering the name (e.g., Wakefield, William) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Auctioneer."
The city/town and province where a catalogue was printed. Town/city names are followed by a comma and the two-letter provice code (e.g., Montreal, QC or Winnipeg, MB). Search for the place of printing using the Basic Search by entering the town or city (e.g., Fredericton, NB) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the town, city, and/or province into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Place of Printing."
The city/town and province where a catalogue was published. Town/city names are followed by a comma and the two-letter provice code (e.g., Toronto, ON or Calgary, AB). Search for the place of publication using the Basic Search by entering the town or city (e.g., Halifax, NS) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the town, city, and/or province into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Place of Publication."
The name of the party responsible for publishing a catalogue and making it available to the public. Search for the publisher using the Basic Search by entering the publisher's name (e.g., Williamson & Co) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by entering the publisher's name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Publisher."
The publication year of the catalogue. Search for the date of publication using the Advanced Search. To find a single year, enter the year (e.g., 1920) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Date of Publication."
The number of pages in a catalogue, which may also include the number of leaves or pages of plates at the end of the sequence. When the number of pages is not known, this field is blank. When the number of pages is known, the number is included followed by the letter p (e.g., 4 p.). Search the number of pages using the Advanced Search. To find catalogues with a specific number of pages, enter the number (e.g., 27) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Extent of Work."
Indicates the presence of illustrations in a catalogue. Catalogues with illustrations will have Illustrated in this field. The field is blank for catalogues without illustrations. Search for illustrated catalogues using the Advanced Search. Enter the word Illustrated into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Illustration."
The organizational order of a catalogue. For example, if a catalogue has all books listed alphabetically by author, this field may contain alphabetical by author. Search for a sort order using the Advanced Search by entering the sort order terms (e.g., alphabetical or arranged by subject) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Sort Order."
The language in which the text of the catalogue was written. Most material is either French or English. Search for a language using the Advanced Search by entering the language (e.g., French) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Language."
The National Library of Canada code for the institution holding a copy of the catalogue. For some locations, the full name of the institution has been included in this field. Search for a location using the Advanced Search by entering the location code or name (e.g., CaOTUTF or Archives Saint-Sulpice) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Location."

Enter the number (e.g., 89994) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "CIHM."
Further information about a catalogue prepared by the creator of the record. Search the notes using the Basic Search by entering search terms or phrases (e.g., Owner not identified) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or search the notes using the Advanced Search by entering the search term or phrase into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Notes."
This field often contains information such as alternate titles, details about the owner, location of the original catalogue, call numbers, etc.
Bibliographic information about a bibliography which lists the catalogue. Search for bibliography information using the Advanced Search by entering the text (e.g., Bibliography of Canadian Imprints) into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Bibliography."
A descriptor for the type of catalogue. Search this field using the Basic Search by entering the search term (e.g., law library) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by selecting the term from the "Type" pull-down list.
