Canadian Book Trade and Library Index: Field Descriptions

The records in the Canadian Book Trade and Library Index have up to 44 fields. Select a field name for its description:


Record ID

A unique number assigned to each record by the database management system to identify the record. A record can be found by searching for the Record ID using the Advanced Search. Enter the number into one of the text-entry boxes (e.g., 569) and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Record ID."


Name

Name of individual or organization that is the subject of the record. Search for names using the Basic Search by entering the name into the text-entry box labelled "Name." Personal names can be entered in any of these formats: Moore, Clement or Moore, C or Moore. Organization names can be entered in full or in part (e.g., Earle Publishing and Mercantile Co. or Earle Publishing). The Advanced Search can also be used to find names by entering the name into one of the text-entry boxes and in the pull-down list beside the text-entry box, select "Individual or Organization Name."


Variant Name Form(s)

Other name(s) by which the subject was known. The Variant Name Form(s) and Name fields are always searched simultaneously. For more searching details, refer to the above description of the Name field.


Biographical Dates

Birth and death dates, when known. This field is blank for organizations. This field cannot be searched.


Gender or Organization

Indicates subject's gender using M for male and F for female. If the subject is an organization, this field contains O. A question mark (M?) in this field indicates the gender has been assumed. This field can be searched using the Advanced Search. Type M, F, or O into one of the text-boxes then select "Gender or Organization (M,F,O)" from the list of field names.


Geographic Origin

Country, state or province, and/or city from which the individual originated. This field is blank for organizations. This field can be searched using the Advanced Search. Type the geographic term into one of the text-entry boxes (e.g., Newfoundland) then select "Geographic Origin" from the list of field names.


Book Trade Role(s)/Date(s) 1

The subject's book trade role and date(s) of activity for the location as indicated in Province/Territory/District 1, Town 1, and Street Address 1. Search this field using the Basic Search by entering the book trade role (e.g., Stationer) into the text-entry box labelled "Keywords." Or use the Advanced Search by selecting a book trade role from the "Book Trade Roles" pull-down list. All book trade role fields are searched simultaneously.
