Digital Initiatives at LAC

Digitization

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) acquires and preserves Canada's documentary heritage to make the collection accessible. Clients want to discover and access information online. LAC's digitization program helps make the collection known and improve access to it.

The objective of the digitization program is to develop a critical mass of digital content that is usable and accessible. LAC digitizes library and archival material in all media and formats.

LAC's digitization program has three components:

  • Mass or larger-scale digitization of the collection
  • Selective digitization of specific documents from multiple sources, as part of thematic web exhibitions
  • Conversion of LAC finding aids

To accelerate digitization LAC is increasing capacity by building technological infrastructure and putting in place appropriate standards and best practices. To maximize digital output LAC is engaging in partnerships and other collaborative arrangements.
