Hidden in the Documents: Discovering Loyalist Stories

Handout 6.3

Criteria
Loyalist Media Works

Slide Show

Each slide show must include the following:

  • a minimum of 6 slides;
  • a title slide with appropriate information/title (subject, author is minimum);
  • clear information about the individual who is subject or narrator;
  • clear information about locations and dates.

Each slide show should also include as much information as possible about:

  • the reasons the person is a Loyalist;
  • details of the Loyalist's story;
  • the person's concerns, problems or future plans.

Students will use their historical imaginations to produce the content of their presentation.

Students may wish to add animation, appropriate transitions, dialogue bubbles, etc., as long as the main ideas of the story are not forgotten!

The time given for this slide show research and development assumes prior practice and skill with this type of software and activity.

Brochure

Each brochure must include the following:

  • a minimum of 6 panels;
  • a title panel;
  • a back panel;
  • a map or illustration;
  • written information on four panels, that will include answers to the 5 Ws for the Loyalist they are reporting about: who, when, where, what problems, why is the person a Loyalist, what future does the person foresee.

Students will use their historical imaginations for some of their thinking and reporting.

It is assumed that students are familiar with software for producing a brochure. If not, you will need to add extra time to teach them how to use the software.

Newsletter

Each newsletter must include the following:

  • a newsletter approach to the story of a Loyalist, with a minimum of three or four stories;
  • a map where possible;
  • answers to the 5 Ws, as well as reasons the person in their current situation (why I am a Loyalist, or how I got to be here).

Students will use their historical imaginations for some of their thinking and reporting.

It is assumed that students are familiar with software for producing a newsletter. If not, you will need to add extra time to teach them how to use the software.
