Abbreviations and acronymsAbbreviations and acronyms have been used extensively throughout EMC. An annotated list of all such forms is provided in one alphabetical sequence. Bibliographies and writingsThe bibliographies and lists of writings following the text of EMC articles are selective. Such lists are ordered chronologically, not alphabetically. Some large bibliographies have been arranged in classified order. Frequently cited works, which are given full citation in the 'General Bibliography', are given in abbreviated forms when cited in the text or in individual bibliographies (in alphabetical order at the conclusion of the list). Two publications originally in English - Aspects of Music in Canada and Contemporary Canadian Composers - were published later in French-language editions that updated or added additional information. Both English and French titles may be cited therefore, and in several instances only the French-language edition is given. Lists of compositionsThe majority of the lists of compositions in EMC are selective. Lists of compositions have been classified by genre and are ordered chronologically within each classification (or alphabetically if the chronology is unknown). The meanings of the abbreviations used for instrumentation, publishers, and recording information are given in 'Abbreviations and Acronyms'. French-language composition titles of generic type (Quatuor, Sonate, Symphonie) have been translated (Quartet, Sonata, Symphony). DiscographiesBecause of the proliferation of sound recording formats, and an increase in the practice of reissuing, the discographies in EMC should be regarded as selective. Discographies may be supplied for the performers of works. They are not supplied for the composers of works. If a person is both a composer and a performer (eg, Robert Aitken), the discography documents only that person's work as a performer. Any recordings of a composer's works are cited in the list of compositions (see previous section). Pop and jazz recordings are listed chronologically in discographies. All other discographies are ordered alphabetically.Labels and catalogue numbers are largely those used in the Canadian catalogues of the international companies. Player-piano rolls and 78-rpm and 45-rpm recordings are so designated, as are compact discs and cassettes; all others are 33 1/3-rpm LPs. Citations that include the works of several composers list the composers but may limit the listing of titles of works to those that are by Canadians. The contents of a record are listed in one citation. An EMC discography does not give a separate citation for each work on a recording. Discographic citations provide the title of the recording and/or the name(s) of the composer(s) and title(s) of works performed; the performers; the year of the recording (or, when not available, the year of copyright or release, in parentheses); the label and catalogue number; and subsequent release on other labels, subject to the availability of that information. The following examples from EMC discographies have been chosen to illustrate the forms used and the type of information presented therein. The explanation which follows each example is intended to demonstrate for the reader the full extent of the information given in the example.
Meaning. This recording (by Maureen Forrester as listed in the Discography at the end of her entry) of vocal works by Srul Irving Glick, Harry Freedman, and John Beckwith, with the pianist John Newmark, was made in 1970 by the CBC (CBC SM-77), and was released also on Select CC-15-073. Each work has been reissued in the Anthology of Canadian Music series: the Glick on the 4-compact-disc set, volume 34; the Freedman on the 6-record set, volume 8; the Beckwith on the 5-record set, volume 26.
Meaning. On the recording of Mozart's Così fan tutte (listed in the Discography at the end of the entry on Teresa Stratas) by the Strasbourg Philharmonic, conducted by [Alain] Lombard, Stratas sings the role of Despina. The three-record RCA set (FRL 3-2629), recorded in 1977, was released also on three-record sets by Erato (STU-71110) and the Musical Heritage Society (MHS-3875-7). To avoid undue duplication of information, recordings normally have been given a full citation in only one entry, and that is in the entry for the main performer or performing group. Cross-references to this full citation are found under the entries for the other performers. For instance, the main entry for the Beaver recording of Pierné's The Children's Crusade is given in the discography of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. Entries on Beaver Records, Walter Susskind (conductor), and Mary Morrison (soprano) include cross-references to the discography at the end of the entry on the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. FilmographiesAny list of films and/or videos includes titles, producers (or Canadian distributors), and dates. |
