Ex Husbands and Old Shoes

By Richard Koss

Ever have a pair of shoes you loved?
That looked great and fit you like a glove?
Everyone said they looked so nice on you.
Made you wish they'd always stay new.
Even when they hurt you again and again,
you kept them just to wear now and then.
Until they made your feet so sore,
you finally left them on your closet floor -
Those great looking shoes you used to love;
the ones that fit you like a glove.

You cursed them for they still looked good,
but they might as well be made of wood.
For they left their scars upon your feet,
which made their charm seem bittersweet.
Though you vowed to throw them out,
they just sat there, turned about.
Then one day - they just walked away.
Thought it best to go this way -
Those great looking shoes you used to love;
the ones that fit you like a glove.

Now you didn’t have to find an excuse
to throw out those damn, hurting shoes.
Why should you suffer with that pair?
There were so many other shoes to wear.
So with some new shoes, you went dancing.
No aches, no pains, just new romancing.
So many new partners with new smiles alike.
Shoes with new colors, new styles, but none like -
Those great looking shoes you used to love;
the ones that fit you like a glove.

Until one night you saw real leather,
slightly soiled from rougher weather.
Nothing fancy and not too bright,
but on your feet, they felt so light.
As they guided you across the floor,
you got to like them more and more.
Now you wear them everywhere and yet,
you know they’ll never make you forget -
Those great looking shoes you used to love;
the ones that fit you like a glove.
