A vigorous portrait of clashing cultures and passionately invested characters, You Can't Push a Rope introduces award-winning author Clint Trafton. Based on the life of controversial, charismatic, and internationally recognized New Mexican activist Reies Tijerina, You Can't Push a Rope recounts a very turbulent time in America's history.

Teenager Chava Traxier, half Anglo and half Hispanic, suddenly becomes a reluctant part of his new step family's battle to regain Spanish Land grant property stolen from them by land speculators, ranchers, politicians and the United States Government. Chava finds his militant Hispanic stepfather's passion for the struggle hard to understand or support.

The situation escalates when activist Tijerina and others force a confrontation with authorities in a small northern New Mexico town. Torn by conflicting ties and influences, Chava must find his place in a time erupting in cultural turmoil.

You Can't Push a Rope was selected by Rudolfo Anaya and Denise Chavez as a literary award winner in the 1997 Frank Waters Southwestern Writers Contest.
