Chava finds his militant Hispanic stepfather's passion for the struggle hard to understand or support.

The situation escalates when activist Tijerina and others force a confrontation with authorities in a small northern New Mexico town. Torn by conflicting ties and influences, Chava must find his place in a time erupting in cultural turmoil.

You Can't Push a Rope was selected by Rudolfo Anaya and Denise Chavez as a literary award winner in the 1997 Frank Waters Southwestern Writers Contest.
