Natsume Soseki's Ten Nights' Dreams is a collection of 10 short stories about dreams. Each dream has a surrealistic atmosphere. Some dreams are weird, and others are grotesquely funny. In "The 3rd Night," the man carrying his baby on his back turns out to have been a murderer. Is it the writer's actual dream or his subconscious emerging spontaneously in the narrative form?

Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) was a novelist and scholar of English literature. He was the author of Wagahai wa Neko de Aru (I Am A Cat) and Bochan (Master Darling). Those works are known to almost every Japanese and are read in primary school. His portrait is printed on the Japanese 1,000-yen note.

Natsume Soseki was sent to England as a government-sponsored student in 1900, after Japan had given up her national isolation policy and was emerging as a modern state. He returned home in 1903 and began teaching literary theory at Tokyo University. Eventually he gave up teaching and began writing for the Asahi Shimbun where he spent many years before he died.

The translators of this collection are professors of English at Nagasaki College of Foreign Languages. They translated this book to introduce Soseki's short works to the world. Professor Loretta R. Lorenz and Professor Takumi Kashima added cultural notes for foreigners. Some pictures and illustrations are also added.

This book is published to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Soseki's arrival in London and is financially supported by the Soseki Museum in London.
