A Further Communication From Stephen Birkett
- this directed more to the lay reader/writer than to the technician

Stephen Birkett

I ought to mention that, apart from my original critique, none of the other messages from me posted on inditer.com was actually intended for public consumption. Until recently, I misunderstood the format of the inditer site, and was not aware that these letters were being posted, nor that there had been other correspondence on inditer on the subject of the piano article by Jeffrey Dane, including the two responses from the author (which I didn't receive on my email). What were seemingly public "rebuttals" from me were actually a selection of some of the email letters which went back and forth between me and Donald Grant deMan (actually not all, so doubly confusing for readers.) It seems that you must have assumed the copies were intended as letters to the editor, and thought they were to be posted. Not that it matters, really, and I didn't say anything in those which I would not have said publically, but I probably would have said things a little differently for clarity, had I been writing an "official" letter for more than one recipient.

Having now seen all the correspondence on inditer, I don't think any additional response from the Alamo is merited. After the smoke has cleared, it should be plain that the heavy artillery has been ineffectual and Jeffrey Dane has done nothing to address my original objections to his article.

Anyone who would like to see a bit of my current work in the field of historical design, could go to http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/~birketts and download the document called "geometry.pdf" at the bottom of the page. This is part I of a two part article about the design methods used by historical craftsmen, and, in particular, instrument makers. It will appear in the April 2001 volume of the Galpin Society Journal. As always, I welcome all comments, favorable or critical.

I would like to publically thank you for your non-partisan stance in publishing, unaltered, all the material that you receive from all parties. This act does much to raise the stature of inditer.com as a forum for serious intellectual discussion.
