My Magic Rock

In Memory of a Special Sister

"I can't wait 'til your off to school," I yelled at my sister, Rhuame, "I'm tired of you bossing me around and tattling on me all the time."

"You are just jealous because I'm big enough to go to school and you are still a little cry baby," Rhu taunted.

Well, I missed my sister more than I thought I would when school started that fall. It was the first time we had ever been apart. I was feeling neglected one morning, and while mama was busy getting our baby brother dressed and fed, I picked up Coal Dust, my black kitten, and wandered across the yard and down to the creek. The water swirled around my ankles as I held Coal Dust in my arms and waded out to a big rock in the middle of the stream. Coal Dust curled up by my side and went to sleep. I knew she would stay on the rock because cats don't like to get wet. I sat there hugging my knees and staring down into the rapidly moving water.

Suddenly the rock begin to move. I kept my eyes on the water and we sailed swiftly upstream. After awhile, I thought we must be up about the old loom house by now, and I heard Mama call. I looked over at Coal Dust still napping in the sun.

"We won't tell Rhu, but I think we just sailed around the world backwards 'cause we are back at the same place we started," I whispered to Coal Dust and we climbed down from the rock.
