The Great Canadian - USA fortepiano debate

While I think what we thought we had - a debate has turned into something else entirely.

We Had:

A story by Jeffrey Dane about The Composer's Pianos

Mar 21, 2001
More to be added to the Piano Debate - - this time Jeffrey Dane sends this essay which really does not address the technical aspects of the 'debate' but rather the social consequences of engaging in such a discussion.

Mar 19, 2001
While not completely concerned with the technicalities and/or idiocyncracies of period pianos and other musical instruments, Stephen Birkett, with his new understanding of the purpose of Inditer.com makes use of this journal in a writing sense.

Mar 18, 2001
A terse, succinct comment on the piano debate from Andrew Nolan in Newcastle, Australia.

Mar 17, 2001
Still more on Inditer.com's debate. This time it comes from Lauffen. We do not know if that is Lauffen in Germany or Lauffen in Austria, but it is from Bill Jurgenson and his shop in Lauffen.

Mar 15, 2001 Who would have thought an essay about pianos would bring forth such a torrent of response. This time from The Netherlands, and an essay from Paul Poletti.

Mar 15, 2001
Another piece from , Mr. Dane titled "Nonsense Man", and is addressed to Donald Grant Deman and The Editor We assume the Mr. B in this essay refers to Stephen Birkett.

March 15, 2001
This particular entry should be at the end. and is the second response by Stephen Birkett to Donald Grant Deman.

The following are in order, top to bottom, when you get to the bottom come back up here to Mar 15, and you'll be back on track. It's all a bit confusing, but Inditer.com readers tend to be a bit more intelligent than most, so they will have no trouble navigating these pages. Thank you.

That story begat a technical rebuttal from Stephen Birkett, builder of replica 18th and 19th century pianos and teracher of such highly technical things at the University of Guelph.(That's a Canadian University)

Mr. Dane's response to the Tirade or Diatribe of Mr. Birkett rebuttal begat an injection of humour (that is the Canadian way to spell humour) but without any pretence or knowledge of the building fortepianos (that is their correct name, in spite of what Fat's Waller called them) with this article written by long time Inditer.com contributor, mandolin and sweet potato player, Donald Grant DeMan.

Somewhere around here, we received another, less technical article from Mr. Birkett. I really do not know how to phrase the titles of each of these p[ieces as I am not of a technical piano bent. So please blame no one, when I intrduce this one as Mr. Birkett's second epistle to the uninitiated and, also, too, as well to the great unwashed.

The technical rebuttal from Mr. Birkett - - - and is was extremely technical, even for a sweet potato and mandolin player from DeMans Store and Emporium, begat a somewhat more explosive comment from Mr. Dane that Mr. Dane chose to title his response to Mr. Birkett's Tirade or Diatrribe.

Now, another begat, but I have begun to lose the sequence of my begats, but it comes from Donald Grant DeMan and goes like this:

If you are visiting the component pages of this saga from this page, please use your computers back button to return to this page, so that you may return to the subsequent page of the debate.

If you think you are confused about it all, consider what must be circulating and bouncing around the head of your editor.

If anything more is received on this topic, a link to that will be found on this page, and a link to this page will be found on the Portal Page of Inditer.com.

There endeth the lesson. Class is dismissed. Bullies will be punished to the full extent of the law!
