The Poetry of Ann Pottle Dolin

Suffering at Santanna

It takes a tragedy to open our eyes
But I'm still not sure that we realize

This young boy a mere fifteen years of age
So consumed with pain, hatred and rage

He all but confessed to his plan of action
But still he did not get any reaction

Stable people don't joke about shooting and killing
To take him seriously we just were not willing

If only one of us had heeded his warning
We might not be in this state of mourning

High school is not always laughter and joy
But torment and taunting for this troubled boy

We did not take his threats to heart
And again a community is torn apart

Two innocent young peoples' lives are lost
And now all of us will have to pay the cost

In a state of shock and disbelief
We share those parents untimely grief

Sometimes the message may not be too clear
We must listen carefully so that we always hear

Easy access to weapons and feelings of rage
Brought this teenager to this crucial stage

We are all somewhat guilty in our own way
For not listening to what he had to say

You ask how it could happen in our community
From rage and weapons there's never immunity
