'Canada's 'Tainted Blood Scandal' please click the underlined line - some of the story behind it, with reference to then-Arkansas Governor, Bill Clinton's invovlement. This report was dated February 01, 1999 and was from NewsOnline.com.

a_1knew.gif - 1662 BytesCanadian Press published the following on Jan 18, 2001 in the Victoria Times Colonist:

The RCMP has opened an investigation of contaminated prison blood from Arkansas during the 1980s, The Canadian Press has learned. There is speculation the investigation may be heating up due to the imminent departure of President Bill Clinton, former governor of Arkansas, from the White House.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Bill McAlpine said Wednesday two officers based in Montreal will be assigned exclusively to pursuethe Arkansas prison blood issue.

"We just thought that we, out of Toronto, just couldn't handle the issue properly, and that therefore additional resources would be required ' "

Continental Pharma, the now-defunct company that imported the prison blood, had its headquarters in Montreal, McAlpine noted.

"A lot of the issues arise out of the Montreal area."

The blood task force was set up about three years ago to investigate possible criminal acts that contributed to contamination of the Canadian blood supply with HIV and hepatitisC.

McAlpine said the task force, involving about 12 officers in Toronto and a couple in Ottawa, is highly active. But he could not say when its work will be complete or whether charges will be laid. "When we make a final submission and report, obviously people higher than me will make decisions on where we're going from there, but this thing's not going away."

He declined to give more details.

There's speculation that the investigation may be getting new co-operation from U.S. authorities looking at a new administration. Clinton was governor of Arkansas when the state permitted a now-defunct company, Health Management Associates, to collect and sell prison blood, some of which wound up in Canada.

This was not an illness which struck overnight. It was in fact diagnosed only as a culmination of deteriorating health for a period of about ten years. The illness was found to be Hepatitis C. Further lengthy bureaucratic nightmares, politicians putting their noses into places noses, particularly those of politicians, should never be put, revealed the Hepatitis virus was given to me through a routine blood transfusion. Our caring government of the time determined it was the prudent thing to do not to check collected, and at times imported raw blood from places such as southern USA penal institutions. It was their considered opinion the saving of a few dollars in checking this blood for viruses was far more costly than the cost of the lives of thousands of Canadians who ultimately received the blood.

Still using their uncanny myopic eyesight, the bureaucrats, politicians and medical guns on the payroll of the Federal Government have determined that the Hepatitis C virus causes a liver disease. Those of us with the disease know better! In my personal case, the liver function is near normal....very little damage has been done to the liver as a result of being invaded by the Hep C virus. However, there are hundreds of other symptoms and hundreds of causes of other diseases as the result of this invasion.

Fortunately for me, my family doctor understands this concept. He understands that I have developed a secondary ailment, also terminal, which cannot be treated now, although under normal circumstances, surgery would fix it. Also, fortunately for me, I have now been put in the care of the Hospice society, so that now, no medical intervention will take place in my case....Hospice will simply keep me comfortable.

What prompted this report was a column, written by Dr. C.D. Mazoff PhD, Executive Director of HepCBC and appearing in the January 1001 edition of the hepc.bull, wherein Dr. Mazoff clearly points out that HepC is not a liver disease...but has only been named as such it seems, in order that the victim compensation guidelines be narrowed to avoid as much payment as possible.
