Impeachment and The Florida Recount - Same Old Democrats

....by Richard Koss

As we await the Friday Supreme Court hearing, and its ultimate decision, which should bring this presidential election to a conclusion, it's interesting to compare the behavior of the Democrats during the Clinton impeachment hearings, with their current behavior, as Al Gore attempts to overturn Florida's certification of Bush as president.

While Clinton clearly lied under oath, and was the first president to be held in contempt of court (and fined), he was not ultimately impeached, primarily due to the partisanship of his party, who argued that it was clear by the polls, that the American people did not want him removed from office. They said, to do so, would be to overturn the 1996 presidential election, an election by the way, in which he received less votes than Bush received November 7th of this year. They also said, with media support, that it was time to move on and put this nasty business behind us.

Now once again, the Democrats are defending their actions, asking the courts to ignore constitutional law, the laws of the state of Florida, and extend the counting deadlines, while subjecting ballots to unprecedented scrutiny, and permit counting of such ballots that had been punched twice or not punched at all. This would require reading the minds of voters; including those who didn't want to vote for either candidate. How ironic, as this is going on, and the polls clearly show the American people think Gore should concede and give up, the Democrats are no longer concerned about polls. Their answer is " we must count all the votes." To hell with such silly rules and laws which impose deadlines and other restrictions on the process.

Well, all the votes have been counted, and more often than in any other state. The same counting procedures were used in Florida, as were used in those other states. Because the election was extremely close, recounts were not unexpected. However, even when taking hand recounts, the procedure for determining what constitutes a valid vote, should not be newly incorporated or invented, just because of the closeness of the election.

But I will not be surprised if somehow, Gore prevails and ends up in the White House. I am no longer astonished by the lack of class and shamelessness, displayed by the Democratic party, not just now, but for these last eight years. And they accuse the Republicans of trying to steal the election? The Republicans did not go into homeless shelters, dragging uninformed, helpless people to vote for their candidate, while offering them a few cigarettes - cigarettes sold by the companies they are extorting money from, on behalf of the American people. The Republicans did not encourage convicted felons to vote illegally. The Republicans didn't send memos to their hacks with special instructions on how to disqualify overseas military ballots. And it wasn't a Republican- controlled media that prematurely and (mistakenly?), announced Gore a winner in Florida, long before the polls were closed, causing thousands of Panhandle voters to stay home, thinking their vote wouldn't matter.

My father was a Democrat for life, and I really believed in the Democratic party for a number of years. But today, they are no longer the party of my father or myself, or most people I know, for that matter. They have polarized us and split this country into segments, in order to insure a ninety per cent or better, voting block from these groups, who vote because they are promised a free ride and protection from everything and anything. The more "unique" you are, compared to the rest of society, the more the Democrats want to help you (and get your vote). Even others, who don't need help, are scared into voting for them, (the Democrats), through the use of demagoguery and lies.

This party has bashed the corporate backbone of the country, while hypocritically taking their lobbyist and campaign contributions, (soft, hard, legal, illegal,) among other forms of industrial blackmail. They have portrayed all successful entrepreneurs, highly paid corporate executives, and especially, individuals who have inherited money, as evil, undeserving monsters who should be taxed to death and forced to share (give) their wealth with those less fortunate, (including people who don't want to work).

Is there anything good about the Democrats? Of course, there are still good people and good ideas within the party. The problem is, however, that although many of them try to appear moderate or centrist, they still permit the left wing of the party to dominate and control it's agenda. You keep an eye on Hillary during her rookie year and you'll see what I mean.

A lot of people think both Bush and Gore are jerks, with little difference in their abilities. They're probably right, but don't believe for a minute, that there's hardly any difference between the parties. There's a world of difference. For that reason alone, I hope the jerk from Texas prevails. If he doesn't, life will still go on and eventually, I won't care anymore, like a lot of other people. And then, I'll just get older and die like everybody else. Who cares?
