Morés of Nations Clintonized
An Essay Responding to D. Grant DeMan

.....by Richard Koss

Let me once again say how much I enjoy reading just about anything you write, not only for your accurate and thought provoking content, but also because your writing style richly augments whatever your write about.

I really felt stupid after I realized how much I didn't know (or had forgotten) about both Canadian and U.S. history.

Now, I'll go right to the bottom line. You're ultimate conclusion is that North American morés have not really fallen. It's just that media surveillance and communications technology, etc., have more directly exposed the corruption, transgressions, both public and private, and foibles of our leaders. In other words, politicians and their enablers have been doing things like this for years, but the citizenry wasn't fully aware of it at the time, or found out after the fact, when it was too late to do anything about it.

That sounds like a reasonable statement, but my concern is still this. Where is the outrage of the people? I'm not talking about the danger you refer to as emanating from a "self-righteous mob," as they attempt to use the courts. I'm talking about ordinary citizens including the media as well, who should be disgusted at the endless disrespect for the rule of law and the continuous, classless behavior of the Clintons and this past administration. The media reported most of Clinton's transgressions, but they never seemed disappointed, let alone, outraged by any of his actions.

My question is this. Would the citizenry of yesteryear have been outraged with their leaders and governments, given similar revelations about them? If not, then you are correct in saying there has been no appreciable change in morés. However, I think they would have been damned outraged. And I think the fact that many people today are not outraged, tells us how low the moral barometer has fallen.

I notice you used the word "foibles." The word is defined as a small weakness or slight frailty in character. Is this how Clinton's behavior is viewed by most? Just a long trail of foibles. I can just see his biography sitting on a library shelf next to Ćsop. "Clinton's Foibles."
