At TwilightMy bare toes press chilled sand
Like a stylus,
Writing the first line of a memory -
Footprint font-
On the portal to the sea,
Horizon sparking with coral cadences.
The sea bellows our names,
Beckoning younger days,
Deluding Time for a seagirt moment
At twilight.
Tears EnoughThe desert is blistered,
Hot wind gnashing sand,
Scorched Joshua Trees
Plying dreams of the night,
Heat dancing unrestrained
Through baked daylit hours.
There are tears enough
To garnish this wilderness
With a salted lake;
Sand spirits chant songs
Of recollection,
So the tears will not have fallen
Without notice.
Laughter of the WindA solitary wolf
Travels the high mesas,
Padding homeward to my firelight
Beneath a swollen moon.
He is nourished by spirits' songs
That echo among rocks
In hidden places,
That crimson his eyes in the night.
Whose fingers can hold
The breath of a wolf?
He is the laughter of the wind.
