General Development Description
Population:
The total Beausoleil Band membership is 1455, comprising of 41% on reserve and 59%
off reserve.
Language & Culture:
The majority of the community members are of the Ojibway Nation, while a significant
number of others trace their ancestry to the Pottawatomi Nation. The Ojibway language
is spoken.
Education:
Christian Island Elementary School is located on the Island. The school offers Junior
kindergarten - Grade 8. Students attending High School must travel to other main centres
by bus after crossing the water by ferry. Some students reside on the mainland throughout
the school year, while others must board on the mainland during the period that the ferry
cannot make it through the frozen channel, usually from January until Mid April.
Social Services:
Christian Island offers a range of services to meet the needs of the community members.
The following are a list of the services available:
- Day Care Centre
- Homemakers and Home Support
- Nutritionist (Public Health Unit)
- Visiting Order of Nurses
- Recreational Services; a Tennis Court, a Baseball Diamond, a Community Hall,
West Beach -for members only and a quarter mile track.
- Police Service - 1 Sergeant, 2 Constables and 1 Office Support Personnel
- Fire Protection
- First Response Team
A helicopter pad was built and is used primarily for medical emergencies. The helicopter
service is provided by the Canadian Armed Forces under contract from the Province of
Ontario.

Band owned buildings and homes are serviced by individual septic tanks or beds.
The water source is undergoing a major Water Treatment Project. The community will be
fully serviced by a separate water distribution system. Estimated completion date is the
fall of 1999.
- Hydro service is available to all members and cottages
- Telephone service is available throughout the community via a microwave station
located on their territory.
- Volunteer firemen provide fire assistance. A fire hall, pumper truck and cube van
is owned by the Band.
- Community members are served by the local community radio station 94.7 FM.
