Mnjikaning Today
Population: There are a total of 1290 community members, comprising of 46% on reserve and 54% living off
reserve. Today there are 215 houses in Mnjikaning, just 25 years ago there were 76 houses.
There has been a recent surge in development with the establishment of Casino Rama on their
territory. There are many individuals and families wanting to return to their home in
Mnjikaning.
Education: They have their own elementary school from Juniour Kindergarten up to grade eight. It is First
Nation controlled. High School students are bussed into the local city.
Social Services: There has been a recent increase in the services offered. They are
the following:
- Day Care Centre
- Senior's Home
- Mnjikaning Arena Sports Ki - basketball, volleyball court, fitness centre, and snack
bar
- Community Hall with a snack bar
- Health Centre
- Public Works
- Sewage and Water Works
- Fire Hall - Composite Department consisting of a combination of 16 full time and 6
volunteer fire fighters
- Police Services
Infrastructure: Mnjikaning is in the process of initiating a 20 year 'Community and
Economic Master Plan'. The first 5 years will focus on the infrastructure needed to
accommodate the surge in growth. There are many band owned buildings presently and they
are as follows:
- Day Care
- Senior's Complex
- Community Centre
- Elementary School
- Fire Hall
- Health Centre
- Marina
- Wilderness Park
- Government Building
- Administration Building
- Ramcor Developments - the economic development arm of the Band
- Casino Rama
- Gift Shop in the Casino
- Coffee Shop
- Gas Station
The Fire Hall equipment consists of 1 Fire Rescue boat,
1 Rescue Unit, 1 Fire Chief's Medical Unit, 1 Pumper Truck and 1 Tanker Truck. There are
16 certified Defibrillator Operators on staff.
Governance: Election for office is held every two years
and is regulated by the Indian Act. The council consists of 5 councillors and 1 chief.
