Canada
It was the
discovery of major oil-bearing structures in Alberta's sedimentary
basin, which
supplied a major impetus to economic growth in Canada. In the early 1950s, the
strongest sector in Canada's economy was oil and gas exploration and
development, particularly within Alberta. While the Leduc discovery in 1947 was
not the first show of oil in Alberta, it touched off a series of discoveries
which cumulatively strengthened the whole economy.
