Deep Percolation Loss

Deep percolation loss is the amount of water that goes deeper into the soil than do the roots of the crop being irrigated. This water then becomes unavailable and useless to the crops. Deep percolation losses happen where the soil is gravelly or sandy and when more water was applied than was needed.
