Sir Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia and Defence, to General Edwin A. Alderson, Commanding Officer of the Canadian Troops: Letter Regarding the Ross Rifle, March 7, 1916
According to Hughes, those who were critical of the Ross knew nothing of weaponry. In this letter, Hughes tried to set Alderson straight, who as a regular and a British officer had always irked the Minister’s nationalist sensibilities. Alderson was replaced in late May 1916 by another British regular officer, Sir Julian Byng.
