Distinguished Service Order
Instituted in 1886 and awarded for acts of bravery
by officers, this decoration took precedence over the Military Cross.
The one shown here was awarded to Vanier. The recipient's military
file sometimes summarizes the acts that earned the man a prestigious
decoration. The majority of medals and decorations awarded during
the First World War are British and as such are listed in the London
Gazette.
