Gallery - Asserting Our Presence
Photography has been an important imaginative tool in documenting how private and governmental interests have developed across the country, asserted their influence and impacted communities from coast to coast. To viewers at the time of their creation, these photographs also confirmed Canada's sovereignty over its many regions. For example, photographs could show that official Canadian institutions made their mark on even the most remote landscapes.
