Like other wealthy Victorians, the McDougall men were recreational photographers, for it was fashionable to be considered a man of science who could master the careful art of photography. In this image, members of the family pose amidst the many material objects of their home, which were on display in the parlour to indicate the family's wealth and prosperity.
