Despite their desire to find better opportunities in Canada, new immigrants were caught between old and new homelands and cultures when they first arrived in Canadian ports of call. While they themselves probably did not consider their journey to be a crucial part of Canadian nation building, many individuals and institutions did, and used the photographic medium to document exactly how immigrants prepared to enter Canadian society.
