1885: On November 7, 1885, the last spike connecting the rails coming from the east and the west of Canada was put into place. Two years later, the railway reached Vancouver and connected the country from ocean to ocean.

1904: Cars might not be a Canadian invention, but in 1904 automobiles were built in Canada. Ford Canada, a company that built cars, produced 117 cars in its first year.

1909: The "Silver Dart" was the first airplane to fly in Canada. John McCurdy flew it.

1914: In the summer of 1914, few people suspected that the world was about to enter a war that would last four long years. Over 620,000 Canadians served in this war. Of those who fought, 60,000 were killed and 175,000 were wounded.

1918: It was on May 21, 1918, that women were granted the right to vote in federal elections. This meant that their vote would count in choosing their Member of Parliament.

1959: Armand Bombardier came up with plans for the snowmobile after the death of his two-year-old son. He could not take his son to the hospital because the roads were snowed in. He decided to make a snowmobile that would permit travelling on snow. Also in 1959, alkaline batteries were created in an Ontario town called Ponty Pool.

1967: Canada was 100 years old. The same year, Universal Exposition of 1967 was held in Montreal.

1980: Terry Fox was 18 years old when he learned that he was sick. He wanted to do something to help find a cure for cancer. On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in Newfoundland. He wanted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry ran 43 kilometres every day for 143 days, but was forced to stop running in Thunder Bay, Ontario because of his sickness. By February 1981, the Marathon of Hope had raised more that $24 millions.
