Glenn Gould in a CBC studio with equipment, directing a documentary, 196?

"The listener today sitting at home behind his massive stereophonic dials ... is ... deciding on things that conductors are supposed to decide.

Even today, the record listener has appreciable powers when it comes to the kind of sound he wants to get from his records, and ... it is by extending these powers that Gould sees the advent of the participating listener.

... the concert hall listener of today, who is essentially a passive participant in whatever is going on, will be replaced by an active or, in the end, a creative listener who will use the recorded performances of artists to produce for himself his ideal performance of any piece of music."15
