The Government of Canada Records Management Metadata Standard (GC RMMS) declares and defines the semantics of a core set of metadata elements necessary to ensure the authenticity, reliability, integrity and usability of records as espoused by ISO International Standard 15489-1 and ISO Technical Specification

A companion document, the Government of Canada Records Management Application Profile (GC RMAP) provides business rules for the use of each element and the relationships among elements.
The following table uses metadata outlined in the Treasury Board of Canada, Secretariat, Guidelines for Metadata Application Profiles in the Government of Canada to describe the metadata standard itself. This set of metadata follows the format advocated by ISO 11179 Information Technology - Metadata Registries and allows for the inclusion of the description in a future metadata registry.
