Henri Cartal was born in Paris around 1875. He arrived in Quebec with René Harmant's theatre company in 1897, and performed at coffeehouses and theatres, including the Eldorado and the Théâtre des Variétés. From 1900 to 1903, the troupe performed with great success at the Palais Royale and Cartal went on to direct live entertainment at Ouimet's cinema around 1907. He recorded for both Edison and Columbia, and between 1900 and 1903 made several recordings of popular café songs for E. Berliner, in Montréal, including "Le Printemps s'avance" and "Quand on a travaillé". A discography can be found in Roll Back the Years.

For more information on Henri Cartal's recordings, please consult the Virtual Gramophone database.
