Simple Keyword Searching

Simple keyword searching is the quickest and easiest way to search the Backcheck database. Simply type your keyword(s) into the search box to search for information in the Backcheck database. If you enter more than one keyword the database will automatically enter the Boolean operator "and" between your terms.

Browsing - Backcheck offers browsing by:

  • Theme - The database contains items touching on 32 different themes. Simply select the theme of your choice from the list and all related items will appear.
  • Decade - The database contains items covering the history of hockey, which spans over many decades. This option allows you to browse items by decade. To do so, simply select the range of years you are interested in from the list and all items related to those years (that are included in the database) will appear.
  • Photo - Use this option to browse the items in the database that are photographs. A list of all the photographs in the database will appear.
  • Article - Use this option to browse the items in the database that are articles. A list of all the articles in the database will appear.

To browse any of these fields, select the "theme", "decade", "photo" or "article" button under "Browse by" on the search page.

Advanced Search

Advanced searching allows you to refine your search by combining search terms with the Boolean operators "and", "or" and "not" with the ability to search within specific fields and limit your search to a specific decade.

Boolean Operators Explained

"AND" - Use the "and" operator between your keywords to find records with all your search terms.

"OR" - Use the "or" operator between your keywords to find all records with any of your search terms.

"NOT" - Use the "not" operator between your keywords to find all records having your first search term and not the second.
