In this unit of four lessons, including a culminating activity, students from grades 10 to 12 will learn, assess, and appreciate the significance of hockey as an important part of Canadian culture and history. To accomplish this they will use primary documents downloaded from Library and Archives of Canada's website: 'Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective'.
Overall Expectations
By the end of the unit students will
- analyze, interpret, discuss and debate content of primary documents;
- demonstrate on-line research skills;
- understand the importance of developing techniques of historical inquiry;
- exhibit effective oral/aural (speaking and listening) and written communication skills;
- manage time and work effectively;
- appreciate and respect diverse opinions;
- create organizers to arrange research in a meaningful and logical fashion;
- recognize interrelationships of historical events;
- recognize connections between hockey and Canadian culture;
- apply concepts and skills to new situations;
- be able to detect bias;
- evaluate resources and other students' work.
