Lesson 3
The Evolution of Women's Hockey in Canada

Synopsis

Students will increase their knowledge of and develop an appreciation for the development of Women's hockey in Canada.

Preparation

1. Print Handout 3.1: Students Assignments of Newspaper Articles, Handout 3.2: Questions, Handout 3.3: Rubric for Newspaper Stories and make copies for your students.

2. Prepare a picture found on the Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective of someone playing hockey and place on an overhead.

Time

120 minutes

Process

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Teacher may post an agenda for the lesson.

2. On an overhead, teacher will show a picture of a young hockey player and ask students:

  • How would you describe the person in this photograph?
  • Do you recognize anything special about this person? (Teacher will hint that there is something very special about this person that is historically significant. Students may eventually speculate that the person is a girl.)
  • Why was she dressed for hockey like a boy? A discussion about the evolving role of girls and women in sports and perhaps in society generally, may ensue.
  • Discuss the use of images as primary documents in history.

Body of the Lesson (100 minutes)

The teacher will:

1. distribute Handout 3.1: Students Assignments of Newspaper Articles, Handout 3.2: Questions, Handout 3.3: Rubric for Newspaper Stories

2. identify each student in the class as A, B, or C;

3. give instructions to read, analyze, interpret, draw conclusions;

4. direct students to independently write notes in their notebooks about the historical significance of what they have read;

5. ask them to refer to their group's focus questions on Handout 3.2;

6. divide the class into groups, each consisting of A, B, and C students to discuss findings;

7. instruct each group (group efforts) to write a 250-300 word newspaper report.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

Teacher will:

1. ask students about what they learned about women's hockey in the context of the affect of changing societal values and attitudes towards women.

Extensions

1. Class discussion of modern roles of women and integration with men in sports.

Assessment opportunities

Teacher will:

1. Collect newspaper reports and rubrics for assessment.

2. Assess overall participation and work ethic of students.
